Smog Check Requirements
Smog inspections are mandatory for most vehicles,
with some exceptions, including:
Diesel models predating 1998
Electric vehicles
Natural gas vehicles over 14,000 lbs
Hybrid vehicles
Motorcycles
Trailers
Gasoline vehicles made before 1975
For vehicles in areas with biennial smog checks, certification must be provided every other renewal. Vehicles less than six years old pay an annual smog fee instead of undergoing biennial checks.
